10 Weeks Post Right & 4.5 mos Post Left

Ok so today is officially 10 Weeks since my Right Hip Arthroscopy and even though I think the injury was much worse than the left, with the torn cartilage and microfracture procedure, it actually is doing very well. At least in comparison to my left hip. The right one keeps pretty quiet and doesn't give me much problem for being the more recent surgery.

However my physical therapy is being hindered by the fact that the left one is still doing worse! It's been 4 1/2 months so by now apparently it should not be hurting. I still can not lie on my side (well either for more than a few minutes), driving in my car (bucket seats) produces an annoying pinching sensation that doesn't go away in the middle top part of my left thigh and outer thigh (seatbelts are terrible for this!). I have a suspicion that it is a damaged Femoral Nerve. Evidenced by this very accurate illustration. Apparently that is one of the nerves that can be damaged in the surgical procedure and I guess it takes a cm per month for the nerve to regenerate itself. So if thats the case I could have this discomfort for a very long (years) time.

I should be doing elliptical, ankle weights and leg presses at PT but it has all been on hold till my left one calms down. I had a cortisone shot in my left bursa about a month ago but it just made things worse and didn't help at all unfortunately. I went to the surgeon's asst this past Monday and we're going to get an interarticular (inside the joint) flouroscopic guided cortisone shot in the left one to see if we can identify the source of pain. Then may need to get another MRI Arthrogram to make sure additional tears haven't developed or any other surgical complications. So we shall see....

Ice is Nice

Even though winter is fully upon us. Those with inflammation still need ice to chill out! This is my FAVORITE ice pack out of all the ones I've tried. Its cover is soft, its contents are flexible and slightly heavy which is nice. I highly recommend it

Bursitis!

Went in for my 6 week post op for right hip and discovered that the reason by 14 post op left hip is still painful, swollen and can't tolerate being lied on is because I have Bursitis. What is that you ask? Read all about it here. Apparently it is swelling of the bursa,a fluid filled sac around the hip area. So I got a cortisone shot that (finger crossed) will help. Although at this point Im just sore and achy.......gives new meaning to "pain in the butt." Guess that's what I get for dancing on Halloween. Oh well we shall see if it helps!

Till the next update for all you hipsters and other pain strugglers out there, here are some pretty pill cases:

5 weeks post op!

I got my progress report at pt yesterday. Now that my right hip is 5 weeks post-op. I have gained 90% of my strength and 75% of my range of motion back so guess thats good! I go back to see my surgeon on Monday and would really like to know, when oh when will I ever be able to sleep on EITHER side ever again?? Really miss that! Otherwise had a fabulous Halloween and succeeded in standing/walking and even yes dancing for 5+ hours straight in costume, woohoo!

Yoga Wonders during Injury

Now that I know I have had torn cartilage in my right hip and that it was pulling away at the labrum for the past two years explains alot! And its amazing to me that I actually did bikram & moksha hot yoga for two years WITH torn cartilage. My standing bows were awesome. It's no wonder that I always dreaded Dandayamana Bibhaktapada Paschimottanasana. Of course! I used to stand up after Ardha Chandrasana, Pada Hastasana and wonder, hm and I the only one with a burning sensation down my the back of my inner thigh. Happy baby and cobblers pose were also not my favorite. It also hurt to jog, ride a bike, walk, sit, and I even did several months of high impact water aerobics which was great till they had me walk across the pool sideways...bad bad bad. It took 10 MRIs yep 10 for the bewildered doctors, at my untiring insistence, to discover the true cause of my pain. At least it is no longer a mystery. Although I read today that the microfracture technique can take up to two years to fully grow strong new cartilage, so it seems I have a long road ahead.....

Surgery Photo!

Here is the best of the surgery photos. This shows the 2 pushlock anchors that were used inside my hip joint to fix the labral tear and torn cartilage (Chondral delamination injury). I also had the lovely microfracture technique performed.

A special thanks to my husband for taking excellent care of me through both surgeries. From the smallest to the biggest requests and even room service. I dont know what Id do without him!
Postop now hurts more than the right! Probably due to no weight bearing and the microfracture procedure.
Today is officially one week right hip surgery post-op. First day back to physical therapy too. This bi-lateral situation is a killer. My left hip 9 weeks out.

Second hip surgery was a success!

Second hip surgery was a success! On my way home from the surgery center...woohoo

The surgery was almost the same as the right side except, labral repair, they apparently did not do osteoplasty this time and instead did a microfracture surgery procedure because I had torn cartilage. You can read more about this procedure here.

Lamenting Lost Surgery Pictures

So I went for my pre-op appointment yesterday anxiously awaiting the unveiling of the pictures (via arthroscopic camera) of my left hip procedure. I was soo curious about seeing inside my hip and the source of my pain. Alas, apparently they WAITED TOO LONG to get them and they've since been deleted from the camera at the surgery center! I am so bummed out. They better not mess it up this next time I really want to see what's going on in there!

Ice is my friend

I'm in the market for a new ice pack. Between my two hips Im going to need some serious chilling!
These all look pretty cool.

8 Days till Right Hip Surgery

Im almost one week away from having my right hip arthroscopy & osteoplasty. Its been a LONG time coming, 2+ years. Im not totally sure my left hip is ready to be the strong one...it will be 8 weeks post-op. Ive gotten all my walking speed back and started on the elliptical yesterday but I still am unable to lie on either side without the left hip giving me pain, presumably because my tear and repair are on the outside 2 o'clock position. So that is the one super bummer upcoming, no lying on my side for quite some time.......

6 weeks post-op report & 2 weeks to go!

Today marks my 6 week post-op from my left hip surgery. It is recovering very well. I practically have all my range of motion back. PT mostly consists of short bike rides, leg weights etc but hopefully can get on the elliptical machine this week. Starting to feel 'almost' back to normal. Walking speed has returned quite well also!

2 weeks from today I'll have my right hip arthroscopy. At least I know what to expect!

progress

major breakthrough over the weekend I was able to do a straight leg raise all the way up woohoo!

progress and pain

Well the latest update is my walking speed is improving, ya! Although now that Im 4 weeks+ post-op they've started me on 'harder' exercises at physical therapy and woa who knew a straight leg raise would be such intense pain! I was surprised anything could hurt that bad at this point since it hadnt. I will have to keep at it to get that up to speed. I can barely lift it a few inches off ground at this point. Hopefully will get better!

Surgery delayed a week

I decided today to push my surgery back by one week. Ok yes its partly not to miss a good party haha, but it will also give me another week to strengthen my left leg before my right one becomes the one to baby. As long as Im better by Halloween its all good!

Tattoos & Surgery Scars

Found an interesting article on a girl pondering covering the exact scars I just acquired with a tattoo. Of course Im very into balance and matching so I'd have to get one on the other side too lol...

Thanks

Thank you for the thoughtful gifts, wishes and emails from family & friends and to my wonderful husband and mother for taking such good care of me! And my one and only sister for the get well presents!

3 Weeks Post Op and almost all healed (on outside anyway)!

I've been following alot of other wonderful women's hip blogs and some have their proud 'battle wounds' so I thought Id post my quick recovering "cat scratches". It's amazing how minimally invasive the procedure was!

I drove myself to physical therapy yesterday and then even made it out for a walk in my neighborhood last night. Of course Im very sore today but feeling ready to get back to working and worrying about other things, at least for a while! SOO glad to finally connect with some other hip surgery grrls at hip chicks!

Tools of the Trade

Here are some things I have found very useful on this journey

First day of physical therapy. Just got some electrical stim so that was ok. Still at bout 8 on the pain scale. And having broken both wrists in the past means crutches are starting to hurt the wrists boooo.

Pain meds have deactivated any decision making capability i may have had and ALL i want to do is SLEEP

Day 4 Post Op

Doing bit better with each day, can almost stand on operated leg with crutches. Made it downstairs and back up at least once per day. Gradually decreasing pain meds. Thanks to my nifty shower chair I can shower without standing (very key). Also can finally lie on one side for more than 1/2 hr woohoo.

Thursday, August 5, 2010

Post-op day one! I am so proud that I haven't cried or lost my cookies this whole time! Gettin some good movie watchin in.

Surgery went well! On my way home woohoo

Tuesday, August 3, 2010

12 hrs from now I'll be headed to hip surgery #1

Sunday, August 1, 2010

What is FAI?

FAI stands for Femoroacetabular Impingement (FAI)
Here is a great explanation...
In addition to having a labral tear repaired I am also having osteoplasty to reshape the head of my femur (leg) bone
so it doesn't cause friction inside the hip ball/socket.

Second MRI Arthrogram Day

Today is the day of my second arthrogram. This time on my other hip. Why not get matching injuries I always say. I decided it was time to get this up and running so I can connect with all my other hipster sisters out there. My hip arthroscopy for anterior labral tear is Aug 4th on left hip, still trying to diagnose my 2 year old right hip issues. Its taken 10 MRIs, 4 Orthos, 1 Gyno, 4 Regular Docs, Pain Management, 4 months Physical Therapy, and 1 Spinal Doc to get to this point. Hopefully my diagnosis is near! More coming so soon!
